WHITTIER

Whittier
is the best way to see Prince William Sound. Prince William Sound encompasses
10,000 square miles of protected waterways, islands, fjords, and over 100,000
glaciers. It is one of the most glaciated areas in the state with many active,
calving glaciers leaving enormous icebergs floating throughout the sound. The
region also offers marine habitats for whales, porpoises, sea otters, sea lions,
seals, and many species of fish and sea birds. In the mainland, bears and mountain
sheep take up residence for most of the year.
Whittier
offers glimpses into Prince William Sound via day cruises, charter boats, flight
tours, or sea kayaking. Year round the Alaska Marine Highway can be taken from
Whittier to Valdez.
Prior to Whittier is the Portage Glacier state recreation area. Stop by the Begich Boggs visitor center to visit Portage Glacier and a variety of wilderness activities. Portage Glacier may be hard to see for visitors but it's much easier to see where it has been. In the last few years the glacier face has begun retreating from the Portage Lake it created. Portage Glacier is still considered a valley glacier.
