Barrow

The
saying in Barrow, Alaska is "Don’t Stop Till you Reach the Top!" a
suitable slogan for the northernmost settlement in America. Along with being the
farthest north, Barrow also boasts one of the largest Eskimo Communities in Alaska.
Visitors to Barrow better make sure they get plenty of sleep before heading this
far North, because one day the sun comes up, and doesn’t go back down for
82 days, shining continually from May 10th to August 2nd.
While
in Barrow, its not a bad idea to take a visit to the Will Rodgers and Wiley Post
Monument that commemorates the 1935 plane crash that killed the American humorist
and the famous pilot. This monument of the fatal crash is on the national register
of historic places.
Whaling
and other natural survival techniques still play an important role in Barrow.
In April and May visitors can often see Eskimos leaving for their whaling camps,
or witness the return of a whaling party with a whale.
Barrow
may sound desolate, but in reality it is a small, but functional community. Visitors
headed up to barrow don’t need to be worried about "roughing it"; the town
has plenty of hotels, restaurants, visitor information centers, and, yes, indoor
plumbing and heating. There are also plenty of small gift shops and craft stores
to make sure no one goes home empty handed!
